Air Force Officers' Wives' Club of DC Scholarship

Applicants for this scholarship are seniors who are legal military dependent children of an active duty, reserve, guard, retired, MIA?POW, deceased officer or enlisted member of the U.S. Air Force.  Applicants must have a 3.25 GPA on the 4.0 scale.  Applicants are judged on academic achievement, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, volunteering, work experience, citizenship, leadership, awards/honors, reference letters and personal essay.

The deadline is March 1, 2013.

Maryland Emergency Management Association Scholarship

This is a renewable $1000 scholarship for seniors pursuing a career in Emergency Management or a related field (public safety, disaster relief, public service, weather service, corporate risk management, meteorology).

Applicants will be judged on a student essay, community involvement, student records, grades, financial need and personal references.

Distinguished Young Women

This is an extensive "pagent-like" competition for young women.  Contestants are evaluated on the following: scholastics 20%; interview 25%; fitness 15%; talent 25%; and self expression 15%.

Winners from the Southern Maryland competition advance to the state level; all state winners compete in the National Finals in Mobile, Alabama.

The sign-up deadline is January 5, 2013 - the program is held February 23, 2013.

B. Davis Scholarship

This is a $1000 essay scholarship open to juniors and seniors; the deadline is May 27, 2013.

In 1000 words or less:  What would you consider to be the most important issue that society has to deal with in the next 10-20 years?  Why?

Burger King Scholars

There are different scholarships to qualify for that range from $1000 to $50,000:

Burger King Employee-Based Track - you can be an employee of Burger King and earn a scholarship; applicants must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA on the 4.0 scale.
James W. McLamore "Whopper" Scholarship - applicants are evaluated on academic record (50%) and participation in school and community activities and work experience (50%); financial need will be considered; the minimum GPA required is an unweighted 3.3 GPA on the 4.0 scale; ACT composite score of 25 or a minimum SAT score of 1700

United States JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship

This is a $1000 scholarship awarded to Maryland students to attend the college or university of their choice. The application requires financial information, an essay, up to 5 letters of recommendation and student resume.

The deadline is December 10th.

Hamilton Relay Scholarship

This is a $500 scholarship for seniors who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind or who has difficulty speaking.  

Applicants must write an essay and submit the application with one letter of recommendation by March 1, 2013.

This is a scholarship worth up to $1000 each year which requires an essay.

Big Sun Scholarship

This is a $500 scholarship for student athletes.

Maryland Mensa Essay Contest

This is a scholarship worth up to $1000 and is open for grades 9-12.

This year's application is online only.  Students should go to  Maryland Mensa for information and instructions and to apply.

The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2013.

SMECO Scholarship

This is a $1500 scholarship for seniors based on scholastic achievement, financial need, and community and school involvement.

Seniors who live with parents or guardians who are SMECO customers are eligible to apply; proof of residence is required.  A letter of acceptance, a copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) from the FAFSA, 2 letters of recomendation and an essay on the topic "why is a college education important to completing my lifetime goals?" are required.

The deadline is March 1, 2013.  Applications are filed in the scholarship drawer in the AP Seminar Room.

Daughters of the American Revolution Scholarships

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) award more than 25 different scholarships to juniors and seniors for their outstanding academic achievements.  DAR scholarships are offered for a wide range of disciplines including history, law, medical, nursing, music, education and many more.  Each scholarship has its own requirements and procedures which must be followed to apply for the scholarship.

All applicants must be U.S. citizens attending a college or university in the United States.

The deadline for all applications is February 15, 2013.  Scholarship amounts vary.

Carson Scholars Fund

This is a $1000 scholarship for students with a minimum 3.7 GPA in core subjects who are involved in service to the community.  A nomination is required and only one student, grades 9-11, can be nominated.  If interested, please come into guidance and speak to Ms. Nusser.

The deadline for the nomination is January 8, 2013.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Scholarship

The brothers of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. are awarding four college scholarships:  1st place is $3000; 2nd place is $2000; 3rd place is $1000 and 4th place is $500.

This is an essay contest open to seniors only.  The essay must be entitled:  "With the rising cost for a college education, what value do you place on earning a college degree?"  the essay must be original, between 700 and 750 words in length.

The deadline for submission is November 1, 2012 (postmarked).

Optimist International's Youth Appreciation Recognition

The Optimist Club of Calvert County annually recognizes the outstanding youth of Calvert County.  This is the first year PHS has been invited to send applicants and we certainly have incredible young people who really impress!

Applicants must be seniors who have a minimum 80% GPA and are recognized for good activities and efforts in academics, community service, the arts and all around wholesomeness.

Only 10 students can be submitted from PHS.  See your school counselor for an application.  The deadline is October 11, 2012.

Recipients of this recognition will be celebrated at the Youth Appreciation Week Banquet on Monday, November 19, 2012 at St. John Vianney's Family Life Center in Prince Frederick.  Students also receive recognition from the County Commissioner's Office in the form of a proclamation and receive a tour of the county courthouse and a lunch.

Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship

This scholarship ranges from $1000 to $15,000 yearly.  The deadline is December 7, 2012.

Applicants are judged on academics, community service, work experience, leadership and extracurricular activities and a 500 word essay.  Applicants must advance through local, district and state competitions to reach the national competition where scholarship monies are awarded.  Completed applications must be turned in to Ms. Nusser in the guidance office on or before December 7.

Create-A-Greeting-Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest

This scholarship contest awards $10,000 plus $1000 for your school for the best greeting card design.

Students submit an original photograph, artwork or computer graphic for the front of a card (horizontal presentation is preferred).  The design should be appropriate for business and consumer use and should not exceed 16" by 23".  The winning entry will be made into an actual card to be sold on the scholarships website!

Michael S. Powell High School Journalist of the Year Award

This scholarship is specifically for outstanding senior staff members of the PawPrints newspaper.  The award amount is $1500 and the deadline is January 31, 2013.

Applicants submit five articles mounted on unlined paper; a letter of recommendation from the advisor; submit an autobiography; and must plan to study journalism in college.

First Freedom Contest

This is a national essay and video contest for grades 9-12.  The award is $2500.

This year's topic is the first amendment and the history and implementation of freedom of religion and conscience in American democracy and the world today.  Students examine the historical document, George Washington's Letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island of 1790.  Students identify the basic principles of religious liberty espoused in this document, research and assess how well the United States has lived up to Washington's ideal.

Students must register online on or before Monday, November 12, 2012; the postmark dealine for mailing the essay or video is Monday, November 26, 2012.

Miss Maryland Teen USA Pageant

This is a scholarship program for students age 14-19. Each contestant is judged in three equal categories consisting of Personal Interview, Swimsuit and Evening Gown. There is no talent contest. The pageant is held at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel on November 2, 3 & 4, 2012. The deadline to apply is July 1, 2012. See Ms. Nusser for these applications.

Beach Elementary School PTA

Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to students who attended Beach Elementary School. The award is made based on: academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, community involvement, quality of essay. The deadline is May 15. See Ms. Nusser for this scholarship application.

American Legion Post 274 Scholarship

This is a scholarship for the child of an honorably discharged military service person (any branch). This scholarship is worth up to $4000. The scholarship application must include the financial aid offer from the college you plan to attend, a high school transcript, a personal statement or essay, and a copy of your parent/grandparent or other relative's Military Discharge paperwork (Form DD214 - Proof of Service). Charles Serabian Knights of Columbus Scholarship Program

This is a $1000 scholarship for seniors whose parent(s) or guardian(s) are registered parishioners of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church and/or members of Knights of Columbus Council 9258. The application must include your high school transcript, an autobiographical essay, letters of recommendation and your high school resume. This is a renewable scholarship! The deadline is April 15. Angie Houtz Memorial Fund

Angie Houtz was a victim of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the US. She was devoted to education and community service. Calvert Association of Educational Support Staff Scholarship

If you are a senior attending college or other post high school education, and your parent works for the Calvert County Public Schools and is a member of the support staff union CAESS, this scholarship is for you! It is a $250 book scholarship. The application must include your high school transcript, two letters of recommendation and a 200 word essay entitled, "What Is Important to Me." The deadline is Friday, April 27, 2012; applications are in the scholarship drawer in Guidance.

Calvert Education Association Scholarship

This is a $2000 scholarship for a senior who plans to major in education either at the elementary or secondary level. The deadline for this application is Friday, April 27, 2012. A typed essay of no more than 250 words describing your commitment to becoming an educator, an official transcript, a copy of your letter of acceptance and a financial needs statement are required. AES Engineers Scholarship

The consulting firm of AES Engineers is committed to continuing to support higher education by providing scholarships to deserving students. This scholarship requires an essay - the belief of AES Engineers is that achieving a high GPA should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. This award is worth $500 and the deadline is October 5, 2012. Information is available at AES Engineers.

SYB Optimist Club of Lusby

The SYB Optimist Club of Lusby will award two $500 scholarships to seniors who have participated in an SYB sports program. Naval Officers' Spouses' Club of DC

Eligible candidates are seniors who are dependents of an active duty, retired or deceased US Navy service member and reside within the boundaries of Naval District Washington. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, school and community involvement. Financial need is not considered. An essay of no more than 600 words is also required. Applications are available in the scholarship drawer in the AP Seminar Room in Guidance. The deadline is April 1, 2012.

Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter Scholarship

Current high school seniors who will be attending Morgan State University this fall with at least a 2.5 GPA are eligible to apply for this $1000 scholarship. The application requires a high school resume,transcript and interview (held the week of April 23). Applications are available in the AP Seminar room in Guidance.

CSM Essay Contest for Girls 13 to 21

The College of Southern Maryland is sponsoring an essay contest for Girls ages 13 to 21. Essays should be biographies of contemporary women in STEM careers working in education, industry or government. Two winning entries will receive prizes values up to $250. A reception will be held to honor the winners on April 28th, 2012. The deadline for submission of the essay is April 7th. The Baltimore-Washington Conference Scholarship

This scholarship program provides funds to help supplement financial needs for seniors attending college full time. Senatorial Scholarship

AFCEA Southern Maryland Chapter

Three $1500 awards will be given for seniors majoring in the communications, electronics, math, engineering, computer and scientific disciplines.  Awards are based on academic achievement (3.25 GPA or higher), extra-curricular and community/civic activities, part-time work and letters of recommendation.

A 500 word essay on your educational and career goals must also be included.

Maryland Ready Mix Concrete Association

This is a $2000 scholarship for seniors planning to pursue a degree in concrete or the construction industry.

The deadline is May 1, 2012.

Applicants must submit their transcript and SAT scores, high school resume and be a resident of Maryland.

Calvert County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship

This is a $250 award guaranteed to one senior at PHS majoring in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship or a related field.

The deadline is March 30, 2012.

Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, submit a sealed official high school transcript, SAT scores, resume, 2 letters of recommendation and a 500 word personal statement/essay.

Delta Kappa Gamma Society

This is a $500 scholarship for education majors!

Calvert County Bar Association

This scholarship is located in the Guidance AP Seminar room in the scholarship drawer.  Qualified applicants are seniors who display good character and conduct, perform service to school and the community, demonstrate academic achievement and potential and have financial need.  This is a $1000 scholarship!

Seniors will need 2 letters of recommendation (one from a school-based person and one from a community-based person), an essay stating educational and career goals, a transcript with SAT/ACT scores and a copy of the FAFSA or SAR (student aid report).

Applications must be received by April 9, 2012.

Elvear B. Johnson, Ph.D. Scholarship

This is a $500 scholarship to be awarded to a senior with a 3.0 GPA or better who has demonstrated community or extracurricular involvement who plans to attend a four year university or college as a full-time student.

Applicants must provide two letters of recommendation (one from a school based person and one from the community), a wallet size photograph and a one page essay on why you chose education as a career choice OR a one page essay describing a community service project.

The deadline is March 30, 2012.

Southern Maryland Chain Chapter The Links Inc.

Three to six scholarships of $500 to $1000 are awarded each year by this service organization.  Applicants must demonstrate academic excellent, a social commitment to community service, the potential for leadership and the need for a financial source to help offset the initial cost of college expenses.

National Association of Women Business Owners

Two $1000 scholarships will be awarded to female high school seniors planning to attend a university who have demonstrated entrepreneurial talents and live in Maryland.

Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship


This scholarship is for student's who have volunteered their time and efforts to contribute to the community in a meaningful way.  Each Student must be nominated by someone aged 21 years or older. Parents may nominate their own children. Associates of Kohl’s Department Stores, Inc. and/or Associates’ immediate family members are ineligible.

Nominations: The nomination form can be accessed at Kohlskids.com.  Forms must be completed, submitted and signed electronically (by typing your name) no later than 11:59 pm CST, March 15, 2012, by a nominator who is 21 years or older. One nomination form should be submitted per Student. Nomination
forms containing multiple names will not be accepted. One nominator may nominate multiple Students by submitting multiple nomination forms. Each form must contain a unique email address for the Student being nominated. All sections of the nomination form must be completed.  The volunteer activity must have occurred within the last 12 months (March 16, 2011 – March 15, 2012).

Awards range from $50 Kohl's gift cards to $9000 for national award winners.

Dwight P. Jacobus Scholarship

This is a $1000 scholarship to be awarded from the Association of School Business Officials; at least one award will go to an education major.

Criteria:  scholastic achievement (minimum 3.0), financial need, SAT/ACT scores and quality of extra-curricular achievements.  A 500 word typed essay is required explaining why he/she is uniquely qualified to receive this scholarship.

Calvert Local Scholarships Application (LSA)

This is a "common application" for over 25 different scholarships local to Calvert County.  Applicants submit one set of materials including:  the Calvert Local Scholarship Application, a sealed high school transcript, SAT/ACT scores, the Student Aid Report from a completed FAFSA, a student resume, two letters of recommendation (one from a school based person and one from a community based person), an essay or personal statement.


The deadline for this common scholarship application is March 16, 2012.

Concerned Black Men of Calvert County

The mission of the Concerned Black Men of Calvert County is to provide a holistic approach to services which support and strengthen the African-American family and which specifically targets African-American youth.  Applicants for this scholarship must have maintained a 2.0 or better GPA over the last two years of high school, demonstrate financial/economic need, character/conduct, participation in school and community activities, attributes of good citizenship, good academics, responsibility, the ability to work with others and evidence of part-time employment.  Three letters of recommendation are required:  two from school officials and one from a member of the community who knows the applicant outside of school.

The deadline is April 7, 2012.

The Optimist Club of Calvert Vocational Award

This scholarship is worth $1250.00 and will be awarded to a senior who completed a career technology program at the "Calvert Career Center."  This scholarship must be used for advanced training at any trade school, technical school or community college.

Applicants for this scholarship will be judged on qualities of character, citizenship, and scholastic ability.  Other considerations include financial need and thoughtfulness in completing the application form.  A one page essay is required stating your future educational plans and occupational goals.  List any jobs you held during the past 4 years and whether you intend to work while going to college next fall.

The Optimist Club of Calvert Scholarship Awards

Applicants for this scholarship will be judged on qualities of character, citizenship, and scholastic ability.  Other considerations include financial need and thoughtfulness in completing the application form.  A one page essay is required stating your future educational plans and occupational goals.  List any jobs you held during the past 4 years and whether you intend to work while going to college next fall.

One $7000 award (the Knapp scholarship) and one $5000 award will be given; the deadline is April 15, 2012.

Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals

This scholarship is for elementary school education majors.  Eligible seniors must attend a Maryland college.  Applicants must write a one page essay or less as to your beliefs and commitment toward educating all students.  Transcripts, SAT/ACT scores and two letters of recommendation are required.

Concerned Black Women of Calvert County

The goal of the Concerned Black Women of Calvert County is to provide academic scholarships to persons of African-American heritage to pursue an education at four year institutions of higher learning.  Seniors must have a college letter of acceptance, a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, two letters of recommendation, a 400-500 word essay, a wallet size photograph and transcript.

This scholarship will be awarded to one senior at each of the four high schools; the amount is $1500.00.  The deadline is April 14, 2012.

This scholarship website has 18 different scholarships that can be applied for with one application.  Applications must be submitted online by April 2, 2012.  Scholarships include:

  • Christa McAuliffe Scholarship for aspiring teachers ($1000)
  • Al Sanders Foundation for Music Studies ($1500)
  • Eric & Cara Thorn Memorial Scholarship ($1000)
  • WJZ-TV Jerry Turner Broadcast Scholarship for broadcast journalism majors ($1500-$3000)

Delegate Anthony O'Donnell Legislative Scholarship

Each year, Delegate O'Donnell's scholarship committee awards various amounts of scholarship funds to residents within District 29C.  Applications are available in the scholarship drawer in the Guidance AP Seminar Room.  Applications must be received by April 15, 2012 and must include a copy of the student's FAFSA and a high school transcript.

Maryland PTA Scholarship Fund

Applicants for this scholarship must be education majors who plan to pursue their educational careers in the state of Maryland.  The following factors will be considered with each application:  commitment to career in education, financial need, academic record and student resume.  Applicants must have a 2.75 unweighted minimum GPA

Award Amount:  $500
Deadline:  March 15, 2012

St. Mary's Hospital Foundation Scholarship Program

This program is to assist applicants in obtaining the education/training needed to occupy jobs available at St. Mary's Hospital (nursing, radiology, lab tech, etc.)

The St. Mary's Hospital Foundation agrees to fund a candidate's education in return for a pre-determined length of employment with St. Mary's Hospital.  The Foundation pays for tuition, books, lab fees, and school appointed uniforms for a period of up to four years!

Selection Criteria includes:  minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA, transcripts, 1-2 page essay on the candidate's career goals and why the candidate would make a good nurse, therapist, etc., 2 letters of reference, and interview.

The deadline is March 15, 2012.  Applications are in the PHS Guidance AP Seminar Room.

AFCEA NOVA Scholarship

AFCEA (Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association) NOVA (Northern Virginia Chapter)

This is a one-time $4000 scholarship for seniors planning to major in math/science/technology majors such as:  information technology, computer science, engineering, natural or physical sciences, national security fields.

If your parent is currently serving or has served in the Navy in an aviation command, you could be elgible to apply for a Wings Over America Scholarship.  The deadline for this scholarship is March 1 (pre-qualification form) and April 1st for the completed application.

The 2012 Dorothy Marvil Memorial Scholarship

The 2012 Dorothy Marvil Memorial Scholarship

Five $3000 scholarships will be awarded this year.  This scholarship is for seniors and requires an 400-600 word essay and the applicant must have an account with Educational Systems Employees Federal Credit Union (located in Prince Frederick).  Applicants must also have a 2.75 or higher GPA.  Email the completed essay to scholarships@esfcu.org     The deadline is March 23, 2012.

Mary Beth Harry Memorial Scholarship 2012

The Arts Council of Calvert County Mary Beth Harry Memorial Scholarship 2012:

The deadline for this scholarship is March 15, 2012.  This scholarship is for seniors majoring in the arts.  Applicants must supply their resume, a two page essay regarding "who influenced or inspired you in your field of study?", provide three letters of recommendation (teacher/club sponsor/employer, art teacher, and citizen from the community), present a finished piece of work (art, music, dance, drama) and have an interview.

The amount of the award is $1500 paid directly to the student.  Applications are available in the AP Seminar room.
