Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Scholarship

The brothers of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. are awarding four college scholarships:  1st place is $3000; 2nd place is $2000; 3rd place is $1000 and 4th place is $500.

This is an essay contest open to seniors only.  The essay must be entitled:  "With the rising cost for a college education, what value do you place on earning a college degree?"  the essay must be original, between 700 and 750 words in length.

The deadline for submission is November 1, 2012 (postmarked).

Optimist International's Youth Appreciation Recognition

The Optimist Club of Calvert County annually recognizes the outstanding youth of Calvert County.  This is the first year PHS has been invited to send applicants and we certainly have incredible young people who really impress!

Applicants must be seniors who have a minimum 80% GPA and are recognized for good activities and efforts in academics, community service, the arts and all around wholesomeness.

Only 10 students can be submitted from PHS.  See your school counselor for an application.  The deadline is October 11, 2012.

Recipients of this recognition will be celebrated at the Youth Appreciation Week Banquet on Monday, November 19, 2012 at St. John Vianney's Family Life Center in Prince Frederick.  Students also receive recognition from the County Commissioner's Office in the form of a proclamation and receive a tour of the county courthouse and a lunch.

Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship

This scholarship ranges from $1000 to $15,000 yearly.  The deadline is December 7, 2012.

Applicants are judged on academics, community service, work experience, leadership and extracurricular activities and a 500 word essay.  Applicants must advance through local, district and state competitions to reach the national competition where scholarship monies are awarded.  Completed applications must be turned in to Ms. Nusser in the guidance office on or before December 7.

Create-A-Greeting-Card $10,000 Scholarship Contest

This scholarship contest awards $10,000 plus $1000 for your school for the best greeting card design.

Students submit an original photograph, artwork or computer graphic for the front of a card (horizontal presentation is preferred).  The design should be appropriate for business and consumer use and should not exceed 16" by 23".  The winning entry will be made into an actual card to be sold on the scholarships website!

Michael S. Powell High School Journalist of the Year Award

This scholarship is specifically for outstanding senior staff members of the PawPrints newspaper.  The award amount is $1500 and the deadline is January 31, 2013.

Applicants submit five articles mounted on unlined paper; a letter of recommendation from the advisor; submit an autobiography; and must plan to study journalism in college.

First Freedom Contest

This is a national essay and video contest for grades 9-12.  The award is $2500.

This year's topic is the first amendment and the history and implementation of freedom of religion and conscience in American democracy and the world today.  Students examine the historical document, George Washington's Letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island of 1790.  Students identify the basic principles of religious liberty espoused in this document, research and assess how well the United States has lived up to Washington's ideal.

Students must register online on or before Monday, November 12, 2012; the postmark dealine for mailing the essay or video is Monday, November 26, 2012.
