 The opportunity to apply is available to a student planning to major in education at an accredited college or university. Several years ago the reading association initiated a scholarship fund to encourage and support students who were interested in pursuing a teaching career. To assist the applicant in completing all the necessary documentation, a verification form must be completed and requires a signature by an employee of the student’s school.  

    Joseph J. Fox, Jr., a graduate of Frostburg State University, was a dedicated educator who understood that reading skills were necessary for students to succeed in academic content areas. During his twenty year career as a middle school English teacher in Frederick County Public Schools, he encouraged students and other teachers to reach for these goals. Mr. Fox became very active in the State of Maryland International Reading Association Council (SoMIRAC) from its very beginning. He served as president of the local Frederick County Reading Council, as well as president of SoMIRAC, and as State Coordinator where he served as our liaison with the International Reading Association. ​He was a man of integrity whose commitment and contagious enthusiasm inspired those of us who knew him and had the opportunity to work with him.

Miss Utility of Maryland/D.C. Scholarship

     Miss Utility of Maryland/D.C. is pleased to announce its ninth annual college scholarship program for graduating high school seniors. Miss Utility of Maryland/D.C. will select eight graduating high school seniors from Maryland and Washington, D.C., to each receive a $1,008.11 single-year scholarship. Scholarship recipients will be notified by July.

Going Merry Scholarships (February deadlines)

    Going Merry is a website that provides student with multiple available scholarships. The reward price, deadline, and requirements vary from scholarship to scholarship. There are some immediate ones linked below, but when you sign up for an account you gain access to more of the scholarships available.   

• In 1985, McDonalds created the McDonald’s HACER Program to assist Hispanic students as they pursue their higher education goals. The McDonald’s HACER National Scholarship is an outstanding opportunity for students who have a least one parent of Hispanic heritage. This scholarship has different tiers for different award amounts. There is 30 awards available for this specific scholarship.

• The Generation Google Scholarship was established to help aspiring students pursuing computer science degrees excel in technology and become leaders in the field. Selected students will receive $10,000 USD (for those studying in the US) or $5,000 CAD (for those studying in Canada) for the upcoming school year. The Generation Google Scholarship will be awarded based on the strength of each candidate's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, demonstrated leadership, and academic performance.

Erica Weems Memorial Scholarship

     The EWM Scholarship was established by Patuxent High School in memory of Erica Weems, who was killed in a car accident on the morning of August 30, 2007. Erica graduated from Calvert High School in 1988, attended St. Mary's College and earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Foreign Languages from George Mason University in 1994.

     Erica, aka Lady Cavalier, was a very athletic young lady and was recognized as "Most Valuable Player” in basketball throughout high school. She was a dominant player in volleyball and basketball in middle and high school. Her performance in track afforded the team All-SMAC championship in her junior and senior years of high school. She was a part of the Women's Basketball team at George Mason University. She also received recognition for volunteering with the Special Olympics.

• Demonstrates a strong character, great academic and athletic ability 
• At least one Coach recommendation

Southern Maryland Chain (MD) Chapter of the Links, Incorporated Scholarship

Deadline: March 24th, 2023

     The Southern Maryland Chain (MD) Chapter will be awarding nine academic scholarships $500.00 each, to graduating high school seniors who reside in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s Counties. Each graduating senior must plan to attend a College or University on a full-time basis in the year of graduation. Scholarships will be awarded for academic achievement, high school activities (past school year), and the applicant’s ability to effectively articulate thoughts and ideas both orally and in writing. 

Application Requirements: 

• Must be a graduating high school senior 
• Must reside in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s Counties.
• Planning on attending college on a full-time basis in the year of graduation
• A completed computer generated or typed application.
• Two signed letters of recommendation

     All letters should be typed and addressed to Southern Maryland Chain Scholarship Committee, and include the following information:

-Name and occupation of reference

-Name of the applicant and relationship

-Length of time that the reference has known the applicant

-Detailed description regarding why the applicant should be awarded the scholarship

• An official high school transcript with the registrar’s signature stamped across the seal.
• Verification of acceptance and confirmation for admission into a College or university
• A minimum 2 ½” by 3 ½” wallet size school photograph (.jpeg or .png)

(school ID photos and passport photos will not be accepted). 

• A 500-word maximum essay on the following topic.

In 500 words explain, what are your career plans after graduation? Why did you choose this path; who, if anyone has inspired you; and how will you give back to your community upon

accomplishing your goals?

(The essay must be computer generated or typed, double space, single side, on 8 ½” x 11” paper.)

(If selected, the candidate will be required to attend a zoom interview during the week of April 17-21, 2023.)

ESFCU Rosemary Brinkley Business and Finance Scholarship

    The Support Education Foundation is proud to preserve Rosemary Brinkley’s legacy by awarding scholarships to students pursuing a career in business or finance. Rosemary was an advocate for teaching financial education throughout her 33-year career as an educator and administrator. She understood the importance of practical business skills and teaching students something they could use to manage money in their daily lives. Rosemary’s passion to help the members of the education community to make sound financial decisions is what led her to volunteer on the Board of Directors of Educational Systems Federal Credit Union. She served on the Board for 46 years in various positions including many years as Chair.
