K of C Scholarship

    Charles Serabian’s entire life was dedicated to service to his Country, his community, his friends, children and even to people he didn’t know, but knew of their need. He loved his God and he loved “his” American Flag. He continually gave of himself. Even in death, he continues to provide support to others through his large financial gifts that he bequeathed to his parish, Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, to the American Legion Post 274 in Lusby, Maryland, to Boys and Girls State of Maryland and to his Knights of Columbus Council 9258 in Solomons, Maryland.

    Charles was a Patriot, a Veteran, a Legionnaire, a Brother Knight of Columbus, and most of all, a friend to all. He enjoyed helping others, especially children. He would be especially proud to know his wealth and his legacy will live on to provide a long-term support of deserving young people who wish to better their own lives.

Application requirements: 

• This year’s (2023) high school seniors
• senior’s parent(s) or guardian(s) must be registered parishioners of OLSS or the father/guardian must be a member of OLSS Knights of Columbus.
• Applicants must submit their high school transcript.
• A student must maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA to remain in the four-year scholarship program.

MDEMA Scholarship

    The Maryland Emergency Management Association (MDEMA) has established the MDEMA Donald “Doc” Lumpkins Memorial Scholarship Program to nurture, promote and develop future emergency management professionals by furthering the education of students studying emergency management and closely related career fields. the purpose is to financially assist students pursuing an associate or baccalaureate degree in emergency management or a closely related career field. Scholarship recipients will be selected by May 5, 2023.  A local emergency management official will present the scholarship certificate to the recipient at his or her high school senior awards program, if applicable, or at an otherwise agreed upon location.

Application Requirements:

A senior attending an accredited Maryland high school who has been accepted to a two- or four-year college or university, and who plans to major in emergency management or a closely related field

A student currently accepted to or enrolled in a two- or four-year college or university who is pursuing a degree in emergency management or a closely related field.

All applications will be reviewed by the MDEMA Scholarship Committee.  Preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in the emergency management field of study; however, students pursuing a degree in a closely related field may also apply.

Scholarships will be awarded based on evaluation of a combination of the following:

1. The quality of the applicant’s essay, including the use of proper grammar and appropriate formatting;
2. Successful completion of the Local Emergency Management Contact Form;
3. Evidence of community involvement;
4. Student records;
5. Unweighted GPA; and
6. Personal references.

• If you are not already attending college: Attach your college or higher education institution acceptance letter, if available. If you are planning on attending a Maryland Community College and do not have an acceptance letter, please submit a letter of recommendation from your high school that verifies your intent to attend a Maryland Community College. 
• All applicants must provide a minimum of two reference letters. Letters may be from high school administrators, teachers, civic leaders, ministers, neighbors, or job supervisors.
• All applicants must submit a 500-word minimum essay addressing the following topic: Describe the importance of emergency management in the life of the average Maryland citizen.

STEM Scholarship Opportunity 2024

    Each year, MTC hosts a Industry Awards Celebration, where they gather to honor C-suite executives of the year, life science and technology companies of the year, and more.   As part of their commitment to education, MTC has partnered with ARE to award eight STEM scholarships. Each selected scholarship winner will receive a $5,000 per year scholarship, for up to two years, while they attend either a two- or four-year program at a Maryland-based community college or college/university of their choice to study in one of the STEM fields.  The scholarships will be awarded at MTC’s Industry Awards Celebration on May 23, 2024 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.

Application Requirements: 

• Applicants must be planning to enroll for the Fall 2024 semester in a STEM concentrated major
• Applicants must maintain a minimum of GPA of 3.0 at their current institutions
•  Recipients must be able to accept the scholarship in person at Maryland Tech Council’s Industry awards Celebration on May 23, 2024, at 5:30 PM at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center
• Letter of recommendation
• School transcript (a current, unofficial transcript will suffice)
• Essay (500–1,000 words) on these following topics: 

-How your work in your STEM area of interest has the capacity to improve the world

around us (advance human health, solve hunger, cure disease, decrease poverty, etc.)

-How your higher education will help you make this impact on the world

Paul Taylor Memorial Scholarship

    The Paul Taylor Memorial Scholarship is a one-time $500 scholarship providing finical assistance to a graduating senior who is seeking a post-secondary career education, vocational or technical training which results in the applicant  being awarded vocational certification or associates degree. 

Application requirements: 

• Calvert Count resident 
• In the current graduating class 
• Demonstration of scholastic ability,  character, citizenship, community service and finical need 
• Have a GPA of 2.0 or above

Trinity United Methodist Church scholarship

Many scholarships that indicate priority will be given to “a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.” What does this mean? Any of the scholarships indicating that the applicant must be a member of Trinity United Methodist Church refer to having received a full membership and having received a certificate of membership.

(clarifications)

-Full (professing) membership of the church involves appearing before the congregation, taking vows publicly confessing Jesus Christ as Lord while promising to serve Him and being received by the church through welcoming. When someone joins the church, they are given a Certificate of Membership.

-An infant or child baptized is considered a “preparatory member” and is not a full member.

-A baptized member who doesn’t confess Jesus Christ as Lord, publicly, in a covenant service, by the age of 18, can become a “constituent” but does not have the responsibilities or privileges of a full member.

-Simply attending worship and giving financially to the church does not make one a full member.

Application Requirements:

• The applicant has been accepted by or is attending an accredited and approved institution of higher learning.
• The applicant cannot be a recipient of more than one Trinity UMC scholarship in the same year.
• Applicants should be geographically located within the southern Maryland region.
• High school graduates and current college attendees must submit official transcripts of their grades provided by the institution guidance or academic records office.
• On an attached sheet, provide a 1-2 page essay explaining what receiving a Trinity Scholarship would mean to you. Consider providing a statement of your faith, your relationship with the church, and/or your views on God’s will for your life.
• Please carefully review the criteria for each scholarship to determine your eligibility and also for additional requirements for submission.
• All questions on the application should be answered completely and applicants are to follow the specific directions on the application form.

Federal Water Quality Association Scholarship

    This scholarship is to encourage young people to prepare for careers in environmental protection by supporting studies leading to a bachelor's degree in applicable science or engineering. students who are planning to pursue environmental careers and are graduating high school seniors are allowed to apply.
